Thumbprint Cookies

2 sticks (1 cup) butter
1 cup sugar
2 eggs, separated
1 tsp. vanilla
2 cups flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1 1/2 cups chopped pecans
tinted icing

Cream butter and sugar with egg yolks until fluffy.  Str in vanilla.  Add flour and salt; mix well.

Roll dough into 1-inch balls; roll in slightly beaten egg whites.  Dip into chopped pecans until completely coated.  Place on greased cookie sheets and make a thumbprint in each.  Bake at 350 degrees about 10 minutes, or until done.  Cool.

Fill each thumbprint indentation with tinted icing.

Tinted icing:

2 cups confectioners' sugar
2 T. butter
1 tsp. vanilla
2 to 3 T. water
Few drops food coloring, as desired.

Combine all ingredients and use as directed above, dividing icing to make three separate colors.
